Top Five’s for the Edwards Brothers at Langley Speedway
Greg Edwards posted the fastest qualifying time with brother Danny just behind him (posting 2nd) for tonight’s Crossroads Fuel 75-Lap Late Model Race. With the “wheel spin” to determine the starting position, the wheel landed on “seven” - this inverted the field starting Greg seventh and brother Danny sixth.
Memorial Day is a day of remembrance. Each week, the races at Langley Speedway start with a prayer from Rev. Tom Potter (Track Champlain). This week, Rev. Potter also said a prayer which touched close to the hearts of many as he prayed for the those who are fighting for "freedom" in Iraq and for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of all American’s. We thank you Rev. Potter for your prayers each and every week.
As the races commenced, first up it was the Pro-6 cars for 25 laps, followed by the Legends for 25 laps, the Wolf Trucks for 20 laps, the Super Streets for 50 laps and last the Late Models for 75 laps.
The Late Model’s were brought around the track and lined up side-by-side for the start. The light went “green-green-green” and the cars roared across the start. With only 3-laps in, Greg had his 27-car side-by-side with his brother Danny in the 26. Just as Greg moved under his brother, the first caution came out. Greg moved back behind his brother for the re-start and on the next lap, his brother Danny went under the 34-car of Paul DeBolt and by the fifth lap; the 26 cleared the 34 for fifth place. Six laps later, Greg too took on the 34-car and moved his way up a spot to sixth. The Edwards brothers were now back in formation to ride nose-to-tail. On lap 38, Danny was making is way under the 48 of Shawn Balluzzo to grab the fourth spot. Greg stayed tight to his brother’s bumper as they both darted under Balluzzo for the fourth and fifth spots.
On lap 44, Danny made his way up as he passed the 8-car of Jeff Sampson. Greg tried to close in but Jeff moved-in between the brothers leaving Greg in fifth as his brother took third. It was the exciting lap 54 when the Edwards brothers both made a move forward. Both brothers were battling it out with the cars in front of them. The 26 slid under the 01 of Jeff Shifflet as the 27 slid under the 8-car of Jeff Sampson. Both brothers moved up and under together as they took the second and fourth positions. Jeff Shifflet road between the brothers as Greg tried to gain on the 01 car for 3rd but the 01 kept his distance ahead.
On lap 67, the sixth caution of the night came out and on the restart, Greg made his way under the 01-car but Shifflet got away from him as Greg ducked in behind. On the checkered lap, the 26 of Danny Edwards and the 29 of Casey Wyatt battled it out side-by-side around the track. They were door-to-door coming out of turn three and just as they approached the fourth turn, Danny shot ahead by half a car length to cross the finish line for the checkered flag, but the flag wasn’t checkered, it was yellow!! The flagman threw the yellow caution.
The announcer came on and called the caution and then said there would be a “green-white-checkered” finish for the late models. Then he came back on and said there would be a 2-lap shoot out. The cars lined back up for a single-file re-start. On the re-start, the 7 of Dude Gibbs was spun by 03 of Bobby Dean on the backstretch causing the last and final caution of the night. The announcer called out again for a “green-white-checkered” finish but it was only one more lap that the late models would take as this time the 29 of Casey Wyatt got just ahead of the 26 for the finish.
No one was quite sure what had just happened as the top three finishers moved into Dale Lemonds Victory Lane. Danny pulled his car into second-place and stood confused as the put announcer interviewed him for the finish. Danny leaned in and looked around as he spoke to the crowd: “I guess they changed the rule this year. We took the lead there when we came back to the finish, but, of course, they called it back. But, hey, that’s the way it is. I guess we didn’t get that memo.”
Despite the confusion, it was a great points run for the Edwards Brothers. With a second place finish for Danny and a fourth place finish for Greg, the official track points now show the brothers tied for First Place for Points! With 18 races left in the season, it could still be anyone’s victory for the Track Championship and the “The Race for the Ring”. Mark Friedman’s Custom Jewelers located in Yorktown, Virginia will present the “Track Championship Ring” at the end of the season.
It was certainly an exciting night for Greg’s Sponsors from ACTCOM Security Solutions! “Many Thanks” to Mark Tysinger and Joe Connors from Tysinger Dodge and to Langley Speedway for the accommodations.
