Sixth Top Five’s for Edwards Brothers This Season at Langley Speedway
The Crossroads Fuels Late Model’s qualified tonight for the Craftsman 75 lap Race. Greg Edwards turned a lap time of 16.533 putting him second and Danny Edwards turned a 16.662 putting him sixth to start. After the wheel spin of a three, both brothers stayed in their original qualifying spots for the start in their Dodge Chargers.
It was great night for the Late Models with 21 cars to start. With a car count of 21 or more to start each event, the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series awards each driver an additional 20 bonus points to count towards their Divisional Championship Points.
On the start, Greg shot out front to take the lead in his No. 27 as Danny moved up to fifth, driving the No. 26. The No. 40 of Mark Wertz grabbed second and ran close behind Greg until the fist caution emerged on lap 29. Back under green, Greg and Mark took off from the rest of the pack as Mark stayed on Greg’s bumper until lap 32 when Greg pushed ahead by a few car lengths.
On lap 43, Casey Wyatt, driving the No. 29 car, made his way past Wertz for second as Greg pressed ahead by nearly five car-lengths. But it wasn’t long before the last caution of the night came out on lap 61, giving the drivers the advantage to restart single-file with only 15 to go.
On the restart, Greg and Casey broke away from the rest of the pack in nose-to-tail formation but Greg was able to put a few car-lengths between them. Casey closed in the gap on lap 63 as he started to bump the 27. Casey stayed on Greg’s bumper for a little more than four more laps until he found his opening and shot ahead of the 27 in turn 2. After leading 67 of the 75 laps, the 27 just didn’t have the tires left to keep the lead.
Greg finish second and Danny finish fifth for tonight’s race. With their top five finishes tonight, the official track points now have the brothers – Greg in first (320 track points) and Danny sharing second place (310 track points) with Mark Wertz. With 16 races left in the season, it could still be anyone’s victory for the Track Championship and the “The Race for the Ring”. Mark Friedman’s Custom Jewelers located in Yorktown, Virginia, will present the “Track Championship Ring” at the end of the season.
It was certainly an exciting night of racing and we congratulate Casey Wyatt on his win!
